Sports-related injuries are an unavoidable aspect of the game!

Golfers frequently struggle to juggle intense practice sessions, physical effort, and competition schedules. At Tarun Sardesai Golf Academy, or TSG, we recognize that golf is more than just training; it’s also about recuperation, resilience, and a long-term strategy for achieving peak performance.

Today, our golfing guide is all about the kind of injuries that happen to our players and how TSG takes a step in resolving these issues.

Golf Injuries: Knowing what causes them

Although golf might seem like a less physically taxing sport than others, the repetitive nature of the game over long periods of time can result in injuries., The following elements play a major role in golfer injuries:

  • Back Injuries: Swinging the club and hitting hundreds of balls every day can strain the back muscles, causing pain or damage.
  • Wrist, Hand, and Elbow Injuries: Overtraining, poor technique, or inappropriate gear (like heavy or antiquated clubs) can cause niggles that, if left untreated, can develop into serious injuries.
  • Shoulder Strains: Inappropriate or excessive weight training workouts or draining gym routines after the long golfing hours could lead to shoulder strains.

Key Reasons Leading to Golf Injuries

Golf injuries are often linked to specific physical and logistical issues. Here are a few general causes that are most likely to cause injuries:

  • Lack of Physical Strength: Golfers often strive for harder and more reliable shots by pushing themselves beyond their limits. However, injuries may arise from a lack of physical strength and endurance.
  • Lack of Endurance: Golf requires endurance – endurance not just in terms of physical stamina but mental too. You need have the metal discipline and the ability to carry the right posture through the entire round, often for days if it is a tournament. A lack of either of these is definitely going to be a strain on the body.
  • Decreased Mobility: Stiffness reduces flexibility and raises the risk of injury, especially around the hips.
  • Inadequate Recovery: Ignoring rest or skipping recovery intervals can exacerbate exhaustion, which can result in discomfort and injuries.
  • Intense Gym Training: Ever wondered why golfer-athletes have a leaner body structure than athletes in other sport? Unlike the others,  golfers need to have a very different training regimen in the gym.  Young golfers, especially boys in their late teens and early adulthood, get into excessive gym training wanting to look more bulky which definitely can affect their swing game.
  • Recurring Niggles and Injuries: Repeated stroke action in golf can strain certain parts of the body, such as the hip, wrist, back or shoulder. This leads to niggles which if not given proper attention, can turn into recurring injuries.
  • Inadequate Season Planning: Injuries may arise from fatigue from hectic schedules and insufficient recuperation between tournaments. Off-season training and planning for what the schedule is going to look like in-season is critical. Golfers have to plan and word towards their body handling the required load when its needed.

TSG’s Holistic Approach to Injury Management

Our mission at TSG is to help our golfers in all facets of the game, including injury prevention, recovery strategies, and providing them with the right kind of instruction. With a staff of physiotherapists, fitness specialists, and sports science experts, we guarantee an efficient and long-lasting approach to injury care. This is how we go about it:

  1. Body Strengthening: To determine players’ strengths and shortcomings, each player at TSG goes through a customized evaluation. Based on this information, we create training plans suited to their capabilities. Our all-round strategies combine mental toughness, nutrition, and physical training holistically to guarantee that athletes develop the strength and endurance needed for reliable performance without going overboard.
  1. Flexibility and Mobility: Because golf requires accuracy and stamina, flexibility in the game is very important. We follow a 30-minute mobility and stretching routine daily to increase the flexibility quotient of every player and decrease their body stiffness, particularly in the lower back and hip area. This not only improves the overall performance in the game but also reduces the chances of injury.
  1. Comprehensive Recovery Strategies: To combat fatigue and minor injuries, we implement a range of recovery practices stated below:
  • Ice baths: Aid in lowering muscle soreness and inflammation.
  • Swimming sessions: Offer recovery and low-impact conditioning.
  • Cool-downs after a round can speed up muscle recovery.
  • Sleep and Nutrition: Get enough sleep and eat a healthy, balanced diet for the best recuperation.
  1. Data-Driven Daily Planning: TSG believes in working on practical data. We fill an everyday data sheet for every player. We use detailed tracking to monitor each player’s physical and emotional state:
  • Internal Load Sheets: Capture how a player feels, whether fatigued, over-exerted, or motivated.
  • External Load Sheets: Designed on the basis of the internal workload sheet, we plan and cover prehabilitation exercises, cool-down routines, and nutritional needs.
  1. Acute Chronic Workload Ratio (ACWR): Our approach to injury prevention is based on ACWR. We ensure players aren’t overworked by monitoring the ratio of their present workload to their long-term capacity. This analysis helps lower the risk of fatigue and other bodily problems by assisting us in efficiently managing training loads.
